Welcome back to Who’s That Lady Music Show. This month, I decided to do double killer tributes: Grace Jones’ ‘Don’t Cry…Its Only the Rhythm’ & The Police’s ‘Sending Out An S.O.S. The idea came to me thinking about my adolescence wonder years! It was the 80s; Reagan (RayGun) was president. Russia’s Nuclear Arms scare was nothing more than a clouded dust memory. And pop movies were about fast times, going back and forth into the future or being so freakin’ pretty in pink.

Instead of being bog down or worried about the arms race and popcorn movies culture…I focused my teenage angst to music. The kind of music that was unique and out the box! I always like artists from the 80s that were original, inventive, sometimes strange and beautiful. Whether it was the style of dress or the many musical influences that “made up that sound”. The Police for example clearly had a sound that was influenced by reggae with a hint of jazz, classical, hard rock, new wave and funk. Whereas Grace Jones sound flows to a hypnotic reggae infused with traditional French & Argentinean music [think: Edith Piaf’s La Vie En Rose and Ástor Piazzolla's "I've Seen That Face Before (Libertango)], Pop, R&B, synthpop, rock, New Wave, electronic, disco and Go-Go.

Whatever mode I was in (feeling misunderstood like most teenagers); I look to music to transport me to a place in my mind where I felt comfortable, unique and unafraid to be myself.

The artist and the band did just that! Bold, daring and totally original. What Grace and The Police have a lot in common of course; are the hypnotic dubbed reggae rhythms serving as their backdrop and that in your face presence with hard rock sensibility. Another common factor is the last song on Grace’s tribute set: ‘Demolition Man’. Actually written by Sting for Grace then later recorded by the group for the ‘Ghost In The Machine’ album.

Another timeless ear wax tribute for the kid in you to be free.

Going back to my girlhood years I remembered listening to a lot of punk and new wave. Most of the artists I listened to came from the UK or the local D.C. Punk scene. My first introduction to Eurythmics was at a schoolmate’s birthday party. Her brother was the dj and loved playing a lot of the new wave stuff or as he called it New Romantics music. I didn’t consider Eurhythmics, new romantics since their sound was a crossed between Kraftwerk and Grace Jones including sporting the infamous androgynous look. Since then I loved this group electro-pop sensibility especially Annie’s angelic voice and Dave sleek production and musicianship. You’ll hear elements of traditional classical, dance to electro-funk canvas throughout this tribute. Their music fueled creativity and self-identity from female liberation in ‘Sisters are Doing It For Themselves’ to self-love ‘Money Can’t Buy It’. I compiled both the group and Annie’s solo work as a sheer continuation that their classic sound never dies.

I can’t believe it has been a month since GSH transitioned to the spirits. We lost a champion who used penetrating lyrics to express his views on politics and culture. An extraordinary individual who went beyond the call not only as an entertainer but as a Bluesologist, teacher, songwriter/musician, activist and griot. The world won’t be the same without him but in spirit he is everywhere.

And in tribute to his spirit comes Black Socrates: Poet to the People, a compilation of songs, poetry and food for thought from the late pioneer.

So whatever you do to keep in retrospect, re-read his books (Then & Now; The Vulture, The Nigger Factory available on Canongate Publisher ), dust off the vinyls/cds and celebrate! And if you want to increase your GSH library, best music sources to rely on are Dustygroove and Soul Brother UK .

Also if you’re the few lucky folks like me, who has Black Wax Museum DVD, press rewind with your friends, or host a tribute film party in his honor at a neighborhood near you.

And in closing, there have been many tribute articles covering Gil’s incredible body of work, his troubles and triumphs: Danny Goldberg (friend & schoolmate at Fieldston H.S. (Bronx, NY); Jaime Byng (his book publisher and friend of over 20 yrs.) and Michael Franti (recording artist - Spearhead and friend/guardian angel). Take me back to the summer of 1989… a hot sticky humid night in D.C. Standing in line at one of the best underground House spots, called Kilimanjaro or Killie’s (for short). The club was nothing short of an international dining/nightclub that was located in the DC's Adams Morgan neighborhood. And on Thursday’s was House Music Night.

So as my friends and I anxiously wait in line, the bouncer seems lethargic-not noticing the urgency to get us across the velvet rope. He finally inspects our IDs with his flashlight, treating us as if we were at an immigration checkpoint. While the club music pulsates against the evening backdrop, I nodded my head to the ‘come on, man…wanna get inside the club’ beat. Trying not to look annoyed knowing that same bouncer sees us every damn week! The line finally is reduced to one or two house heads. Once we’re inside with baby powder in hand, we find our “spots” on the dance floor and sprinkle a little bit as we glided to the sounds of New York, Chicago, & Detroit house! This retro late 89s-mid 90s house tribute is a headphone trip to the days of jacking your body and sweating our problems of the worlds away!

LADY ELIX PRESENTS SIGN OF THE OX: GIL SCOTT-HERON'S BIRTHDAY TRIBUTE (APRIL 1, 1949)

According to Chinese Astrology, folks who are born under the Year of the OX are supremely self-assured, and as a result are noted for inspiring confidence in others. Generally patient and thoughtful, they measure their words, and will speak clearly and concisely often when it matters the most.

Gil Scott-Heron’s music reflects the above statement in many ways to those who listen, dance & raise their consciousness to his expressions. I can go on about his contribution as one of our most prolific singer, songwriter, musician, social-commentator, author & poet.

The words and the messages in his music are clear and precisely to the point. We should care about humanity and the world-at-large but somehow that message got lost. So I’m here to let you know that his music is the constant reminder of what we need to do in the here and now. I recall the lyrics from ‘Work for Peace’ when Gil said, ‘We can’t do everything but we can do something’. I feel as a human race we ought to get it going but somehow we remain stuck in the mud. As I’ve been on this planet for many years and the message is still not getting through to many people and it’s sad. The lives of Malcolm, & Martin were taken but their messages should’ve stayed with us.

I recently caught a glance of a YouTube video of Gil at a music festival press conference discussing a book he’s working on ‘The Last Holiday’. The book should be released -GODWILLING- sometime this year. It’s Gil’s diary on his life as well as his involvement with Stevie Wonder’s crusade to make MLK’s birthday a National Holiday. A must read with great interest!

The question I keep hearing from HipHop heads is, are there any female emcees representing Hip Hop Culture right now? This question has been bounced around too many times over but very few are willing to investigate answers. As I see, it’s not very hard to search. You see them on music channels and hear them on the radio but the quest has very little to do with variety unless they’re dressed in scantily-clad outfits in order to gain record sales. But that backlash usually comes with a price on how their image is reflective on young girls emulating what they see. That question goes to show how little consumers are willing to seek the truth rather accept what is being marketed to them. Unfortunately, the female representation in Hip Hop is what the entertainment industry is willing to exploit as a mere product capitalizing with little creativity and no originality. I’m frustrated with that question; I channeled that frustration to compile this mix just to showcase the lyricism, originality and variety of these ladies. There are others that I haven’t had a chance to add onto but just to give you a sample of what’s missing out there. And to answer that question…yes, there are female emcees representing today…all you have to do is stop, look and listen...

Lady Elix Presents… Dillicious!

What can I say about Dilla aka JayDee, I’m one of the few fans who have been listening to his production work all along but never knew who he was until his death in 2006.

Following his death, the Hip Hop community became centered upon his music and image. Many Dilla’s collaborators noted The Roots, Common, Busta Rhymes, Mos Def, Erykah Badu, Madlib, Slum Village etc… performed and/or recorded tributes, and a large number of us fans voiced our support for the late Hip Hop producer/MC. Dilla's music experienced a resurgence in his popularity with listeners many times over than when he was alive, partly due to media exposure.

Since then I surveyed into his discography to come up with an edible tribute set for your musical palate. Without Dilla, the world would have been a dull place!
